Notes and Editorial Reviews

A lovely player — here we have Gendron's noble tone, most beautifully tender passages, great agility, and real subtlety.

A lovely player. Gendron doesn't play the Haydn with the intensity that we heard recently from du Pré; but there are lots of ways of playing everything and here we have Gendron's noble tone, most beautifully tender passages, and great agility. There is great subtlety in his playing, too—real subtlety, for tone variation, for instance, is less obviously noticeable than it is with du Pré. Not that I at all want to prefer one to the other—only to point out that here are two artists of very great stature who give utterly different sorts of performance.

Note that the Boccherini
Read more is not in B flat: but there is a link between this one and GrUtzmacher's so-called Bocchcrini in B flat, for this G major's slow movement is that most exquisite one Grutzmacher pinched for his concoction. Gendron has already recorded the B flat in the original version and now puts us further in his debt by giving us the G major Concerto. He plays his own cadenzas in both and they are admirable.

This most satisfying playing gets very stylish support from Raymond Leppard and the LSO, while—almost wonder of wonders—the soloist is perfectly balanced with the orchestra.
