Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is undoubtedly a great performance of Sibelius's Fifth... It has a certain spare quality, even a suggestion of harshness of texture which suits the score admirably. Yet as RL commented, it is gloriously spacious and atmospheric. In April 1978 he compared this reading with Karajan's newer HMV disc finding the newer account, if anything, broader and more spacious and certainly magnificent. The HMV sound is somewhat richer, more opulent. But that is not necessarily all advantage. In the DG version there is a haunting sense of desolation in the first movement to make the joyous rush at the coda even more contrasted, while the powerful Andante and the 'magical sweep' of the finale combine to make this a totally compelling listening Read more experience.
