Notes and Editorial Reviews
During these last few months I seem to have spent a surprising amount of time listening to new recordings, or old ones, of Mozart's Serenade for 13 instruments—and I can think of many less agreeable occupations. Here we have both a new and an old, the latter being from the admirable set of Mozart's complete wind music by the Netherlands group which was justly praised when first issued 16 years ago. They still sound well, good, direct, slightly sober performances; and the inclusion of the E flat Serenade, K375 as a very generous filler certainly gives the Philips release a strong competitive edge. There are one or two features of accentuation or phrasing, and ornamentation, that I would regard as less than ideal, but no one I think would
find these readings unsatisfactory.
