Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is a big, rambunctious performance of a Russian Romantic classic, at conventional tempos, with the first-movement repeat. There are moments of less than perfect discipline, and the orchestra's strings and winds lack the last word in tonal allure, but the spirit is right. The performance has the big sweep needed for this symphony, and—a good critical measure—the final coda raises goose bumps. The 1994 recorded sound is effective if not subtle. At such a budget price, highly recommended.
