Notes and Editorial Reviews

Music Director of Chicago’s Music of the Baroque since 2002, Jane Glover has conducted orchestras to much acclaim in England, Europe and North America. She made her professional debut at the Wexford Festival, conducting her own edition of Cavalli’s L’Eritrea. She subsequently joined Glyndebourne and was Music Director of the Glyndebourne Touring Opera from 1981 to 1985. From 1984 to 1991 she was Artistic Director of the London Mozart Players. In January 2009, she joined the Royal Academy of Music as Artistic Director of Opera. On this recording, she leads the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in engaging and insightful performances of two outstanding Haydn symphonies, Nos. 102 in B flat major and 104 in D major, nicknamed "London".  Outstanding Performance August 11, 2016 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Gail M. has it exactly right! I'm sure there are some Arkivmusic patrons who will immediately sense overkill and overexposure when they see this CD listed in Arkivmusic's inventory. After all, who really needs yet another recording of Haydn's Symphonies #102 and #104, given the massive Haydn discography already available? Good question.... but there's a good answer, which centers on the supreme audiophile quality of this disk. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, under Jane Glover's direction, gives a truly majestic performance of these 2 wonderful symphonies, and the audio engineering of the program is absolutely sensational- total clarity, wide dynamic range, great depth of orchestral sound. Eschewing flashy pyrotechnics, Jane Glover's pacing is moderate, and her sure-handed with the conductor's baton allows the intricate nuances embedded in Haydn's masterful scores to be heard and enjoyed. I can especially recommend this great recording to anyone building a Haydn collection piece by piece and who have yet to add these two works to their collection. On the other hand, if you already own lots of Haydn, this disk is still very worthwhile for the reasons I've discussed in these comments. If you fancy world class orchestral sound, try Haydn the way the RPO plays it- you won't be disappointed. Strong recommendation!" Report Abuse
Great Haydn performances! May 27, 2014 By Gail M. (Goleta, CA) See All My Reviews "This disk with Symphonies 102 and 104 is a delightful way to enjoy these works. Nothing goes wrong in these lively, witty readings. Reasonable tempos, good bslsnce, and precision are there, played on modern istruments. The sound is excellent, too." Report Abuse
