Notes and Editorial Reviews

"In Fanfare 34:2 I welcomed Volume 2 of this series, which promises for the first time to bring us a complete recording of all of Handel cantatas. I found much to praise in that recording, saying I looked forward with excitement to the forthcoming volumes. Volume 1 was not submitted for review at that time, but it has made a belated appearance along with the two latest volumes.

In approaching this task, conductor Marco Vitale has made some decisions that will be seen in all volumes of the series. He plans to group the concertos by city of composition or first performance. As a basis for the scores, he prefers the Friedrich Chrysander edition from the 19th century, finding it more accurate than the more-recent Halle Handel
Read more Edition, with comparisons to any available manuscripts. The continuo instruments are cello and harpsichord (with blessedly no plucker in sight), although Vitale believes some cantatas were accompanied by solo harpsichord, as he does with Allor ch’io dissi addio in Volume 1. For a discussion of pitch, see my review of Volume 2.

The first volume contains one sizable instrumental cantata and three continuo cantatas. What I said about Volume 2 applies as well to this initial volume: “Stefanie True has a beautiful voice. It is warm, and she is able to color it for expressive purposes in response to the text. She is adept at coloratura and has a good trill. Marco Vitale provides sympathetic support, and his period band plays expertly.” The instrumental cantata Da quel giorno fatale has been much recorded; I am aware of seven previous recordings. Allor ch’io dissi and Care selve are available on a Hungaroton release containing seven continuo cantatas. Ditemi, o piante is, as far as I am aware, new to the recording catalog. Although there are certainly good recordings among the previous versions, this new recording is easily a top recommendation, combining as it does excellent performances, an attractive price, and the chance to add a previously unavailable cantata to your collection."
