Notes and Editorial Reviews

"By and large the solo contributions are...strong and they are supported by several fine instrumental obbligatos. The soprano "Laudamus te" is beautifully sung by Anne Sofie von Otter and here Samuel Magad's violin solo is lightly bowed and lyrical. Felicity Lott and Hans Peter Blochwitz are pleasingly matched in the "Domine Deus" and are accompanied by affectingly soft-spoken flute playing from Donald Peck. Von Otter also sings the contralto solos which come over outstandingly well. In the "Qui sedes" she is admirably partnered by the fine oboist, Ray Still, on this occasion, of course, playing an oboe d'amore. William Shimell gives a strong if somewhat aggressive performance of the "Et in Spiritum Read more sanctum", delicately accompanied once again by Ray Still with Richard Kanter (oboes d'amore). The bass, Gwynne Howell, is effectively resonant yet his approach and technique with its comparatively wide vibrato is somewhat at odds with the other members of the solo team. The "Quoniam tu solus Sanctus" is not sufficiently well focused vocally, but clearly projected by Dale Clevenger's excellent horn obbligato; and..the "Cum Sancto Spiritu" is spritely and effective with some notably fine playing from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra...Most of the solo numbers are affecting and repeated listening will bring its own rewards."
