Few operas premiered with the success of either 'Cavalleria Rusticana' or 'I Pagliacci,' and though the latter has been consistently admired, the former is experiencing a resurgence in prominence. Separated by just two years, the two are associated by their verismo style and the overwhelming popularity of the music.
The story revolving around the staging of a play within the opera, 'I Pagliacci' is as brilliant a drama as it is an opera. The tragic tale is as crowd-pleasing as its music, and the jealousy of a cheated lover is a timeless theme.
The lesser known 'Cavalleria Rusticana' is actually the earlier composition, sharing both theme and style. Though its arias are not as familiar, its music was popular beyond all critical
