Notes and Editorial Reviews

Christine Schafer faces intense competition in this repertoire but her individuality, and the strong directorship of Reinhard Goebel, create a distinctive addition to the catalogue

Only recently I reviewed in these pages another recording of the same two wedding cantatas by Bach, performed by Emma Kirkby and the Academy of Ancient Music. One of the works, Weichet nor, betriihte Schatten ranks among Bach's best-loved cantatas, but the other, 0 holder Tag, erwiinsch te Zeit (No. 210), is much less often heard. To these, Christine Schafer adds another Bach favourite, jauchzet Gott in al/en Landen! (No. 51) which, although not specifically for a wedding, confirms propriety in a nuptial context. An interesting feature of
Read more this reading is its use of a version of the piece arranged by Bach's eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann, who added a second trumpet and timpani to his father's original scoring for trumpet, strings and continuo.

In summary, making a choice is going to be difficult. Kirkby's approach to No. 202 is emotionally satisfying whereas Goebel's treatment of the penultimate aria turns into a romp by the end and one which will certainly pall with me on repeated hearing. But Schafer's vocal brilliance and unfailing security, together with Goebel's lively, if on occasion provocative gestures make No. 210 one of the most alert and interesting performances of the piece that I have heard. And Schafer rises brilliantly to the occasion in No. 51. A stimulating and often satisfying release.
