Notes and Editorial Reviews
Here’s another one of those singleton releases that may well go unremarked, but it really is terrific and deserves your consideration. This originally was released on Collins Classics, and no one had any special expectations for Wagner by Simonov, but he got the orchestra to play the living daylights out of the music, and the engineering was fabulously rich and powerful. The result is surely one of the best collections of Wagner highlights around. And Simonov does have ideas: the measured Prelude and Liebestod rises to the kind of engulfing climax that we all too seldom hear. Siegfried’s Rhine Journey really surges, and the Funeral Music is crushingly powerful. In short, it’s just great stuff, and
one of those discs you really can enjoy over and over when you feel like a chunk or two of Wagner.
