Born in Naples, Giuseppe Danise first studied singing in his hometown. In 1906 he made his debut and soon established himself - yet on provincial stages - as one of the leading Italian baritones. He next appeared in Palermo, Parma and was in the very first Verona Festival. In 1920, he made his Met debut and remained there until 1932. In 1947 he married Bidu Sayao and became her manager, watching her career "like a hawk". They made their home in New York, where Danise also taught singing. One of his most famous students was Regina Resnik. One of the main reasons Danise has fallen into oblivion today is that most of his recordings were made for Brunswick, who stopped their production of classical music in 1930. They were also not well

represented in Europe. Without question Danise ranks among the best Italian baritones of his generation. He combined the lyricism of DeLuca and the dramatic temperament of Scotti with Stracciari's sonority. Among collectors, his records are considered to be relatively rare. Read less
