Notes and Editorial Reviews

For Renata Tebaldi in this role my admiration is undimmed. The voice then was a superb instrument. She shirks nothing. Supporters of Maria Callas in the part may not find so many nuances or colourations or ingratiations. But I confess that I can do without a good many such in this role, in exchange for predictability, security and unwavering support of breath in the business of vocal emission at the desired pitch and pressure. Mr Erede's conducting is good if seldom quite inspiring in the de Sabata manner.
