Notes and Editorial Reviews

This disc follows an earlier issue. The Romance of the Rose, on the same label, but the ensemble then included just soprano Joyce Todd with five instrumentalists. Here she is joined by three more singers and five instrumentalists, two of whom are new. The interpretations by this American ensemble are well thought out, even if the instruments seem to be adding too much to the texture. The sonics are closer than usual for sacred music of this period, although the room sound (the chapel in San Rafael) is warm. The notes state that the place of these sacred Latin texts in the liturgy is not certain, "if, indeed, it would even have been part of the service." But scholars would have a much harder time figuring out what part this music Read more would play in secular circles. For its additions to the discography, then, this disc can be recommended...
