Notes and Editorial Reviews

Pancho Vladigerov is considered by many to be the most influential composer that Bulgaria has yet produced, gaining fame between the World Wars and earning the admiration of Shostakovich. The three works recorded here are a testament to Vladigerov’s mission to bring Bulgarian music to international attention, successfully combining elements of folk music with European classical tradition. The Vardar Rhapsody has been called ‘the Bulgarian equivalent of Chopin’s Polonaise in A,’ and the lively and exotic Seven Symphonic Bulgarian Dances is among the most notable of a series of works that fuse joyous regional melodies with sophisticated Western orchestration.  Lively Nationalistic Music; Nicely Reorded/Played February 16, 2020 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "This new Naxos recording features 3 works by 20th century Bulgarian composer Pancho Vladigerov. Dating from the late 1920's and early 1930's, the Bulgarian Dances, Vardar Rhapsody, and Bulgarian Suite all offer colorful, often brash, scoring that is really fun to hear. The orchestra performing the program is a high quality Bulgarian orchestra, conducted by Nayden Todorov. I think one of the attractions of this recording is its testimony to the quality of classical music from Southeast Europe, a region which frankly has been somewhat overlooked and overshadowed by rest of the continent. Therefore, I am happy to recommend this recording. It will not strike you as the most sophisticated music you have ever heard, but so what? This is music to enjoy, and I'm sure it will do that."
