Notes and Editorial Reviews

A vivid and enterprising panoramic survey across postwar Estonian orchestral music.

It is ironic that the pieces on this disc that are most 'advanced' in manner are the oldest and most oldfashioned: those by Arvo Part, from his dodecaphonic period before he converted to mystic minimalism. Nekrolog (1960) and the First Symphony (1964) are typical of their time, well put together but stylistically anonymous. Part — never a natural symphonist like Tubin — makes a good stab at the form first time around; if it symphony is the "large-scale integration of contrasts", then only the fitful integration lets him down. Tubin's brand of symphonism was for long dismissed as archaic; the brash first movement (1982), alas,
Read more was all that he could complete of the Eleventh, though I doubt the finished whole would have been quite of his best (such as, say, Nos. 5 or 8).

This enterprising panoramic survey across postwar Estonian orchestral music concludes with three works by Erkki-Sven Tüür (b.1959), which give a good introduction to the music of that country's newest rising star. Paavo Jarvi elicits performances throughout that the compositions merit. In the case of Searching and Insula deserta ("Desert Island", 1989), their collation here with Zeitraum (1992) is a definite plus, while Part devotees will want this disc for Nekrolog anyway; taken together with the Tubin, they all make for a very vivid programme.
