I recommend Pennario, but not not Wallenstein. March 26, 2018 By Homer E Price (Sylva, NC) See All My Reviews "My review of this CD is definitely mixed. I would have given the performance of Concerto No. 2 five stars. In this recording, Leonard Pennario fully conveys all of the romanticism and all of the dynamism of Rachmaninov's music, as he did in a live performance of the concerto that I heard decades ago. That performance was one of the high points of my life as a classical music listener. On the other hand, in this recording, Alfred Wallenstein butchers Symphony No. 2. I would have given his performance only one star. He cuts ten minutes out of the first movement, four minutes out of the second movement, and more than five minutes out of each of the last two movements. Nothing could be more musically satisfying than the full, uncut allegro molto second movement, which is already the shortest one in the symphony, but Wallenstein slashes off over one third of it. If you want to hear a critically praised performance of the unedited version of the symphony, still on only one CD, try the one conducted by Gennadi Rozhdestvensky: http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=1735981" Report Abuse
