Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Czech Philharmonic Quartet is a group composed of the leading soloists of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. For its new production, the quartet chose original transcripts (edits) originally of two piano cycles by Leoš Janácek – “On an overgrown Path” and “In the mists.” The result is a very interesting and impressive interpretation of Janacek's music. “On an Overgrown Path” is a cycle of fifteen piano pieces. It is organized into two volumes, labeled as Book 1 and Book 2. The individual pieces are based largely on Moravian folk melodies. “In the Mists” is Janacek’s last substantial solo work for the piano. The piano cycle was written in 1912, a few years after Janacek had lost his daughter Olga and the major opera houses were Read more rejecting his works. All four parts of the cycle are anchored in “misty” keys with many flats, and meter changes are frequent. Read less

Great Music; Superb Performance May 20, 2018 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "This new recording from the ArcoDiva label is a real winner and sure to please, especially for chamber music fans. The Czech Philharmonic Quartet is a string quartet composed of leading string players from the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, and on this recording they present a wonderful program of works transcribed for string quartet from the pen of Leos Janacek. Originally composed for solo piano, On an Overgrown Path and In the Mists create exactly what their titles suggest- an atmospheric and lyrical journey through the Czech countryside. What we actually get with On an Overgrown Path are Books 1 and 2, consisting of a total of 15 relatively short pieces, all of which tie together nicely. As anyone even remotely familiar with Janacek's music can attest, there is just enough spicy, pungent, off-center melodic content to intrigue and delight the listener. These Janacek tonal characteristics are seamlessly woven into the larger atmospherics of the program, which of course bring out the paradigmatic freshness and beauty of Czech music. I really enjoyed listening to this excellent new recording, and I hope that you will be willing to give it a try. Definitely recommended." Report Abuse
