Notes and Editorial Reviews

On this new release, violinist Judith Ingolfsson and pianist Vladimir Stoupel present a lovely program of works by Poulenc, Ferroud, and Ravel. Judith Ingolfsson and Vladimir Stoupel are both soloists with strong profiles, who search passionately for new paths in the intimate atmosphere of the chamber music recital. Their dedication and musical curiosity leads to performances and recordings of repertoire ranging from the traditional to the unjustly forgotten or neglected. With a special focus on music of the 20th Century, the Duo Ingolfsson-Stoupel presents dynamic programs that explore the countless fascinating connections between composers, history and the power of musical communication. A recent world premiere performance of the Sonata Read more for Violin and Piano by Paul Arma at the Konzerthaus Berlin was hailed as the “sensation of the evening” by Deutschlandfunk - “there was an intensity in the performance that no one in the audience could escape."

REVIEW:

We begin with Polenc’s 1943 Violin Sonata. The violinist's emotional involvement is reserved for the fast passages, played with a wonderfully bright, edgy tone and spot-on technique. The pianist is fully engaged as her partner throughout.

Tragically, Pierre-Octave Ferroud, born in 1900, died in an auto accident in 1936. His music is very busy, almost Hindemith-like in its melodic and harmonic contours without being a copy. If this sonata is typical of his work, he surely succeeded. This is a great piece, beautifully constructed and well played by the duo.

Ingolfsson plays the Ravel Sonata like a straight French sonata and thus loses connection with the jazz side.

Overall, then, a good recital, particularly in their performance of the Ferroud work, that just doesn’t quite work in the Ravel.
