Notes and Editorial Reviews

Jacob Obrecht's name may now be less familiar than those of some of his Flemish contemporaries, yet in his lifetime he was considered second only to Josquin. Stephen Rice and The Brabant Ensemble uncover more Renaissance treasures with this program featuring the Missa Grecorum.

REVIEW:

The mixed voice Brabant Ensemble has built its reputation on Renaissance sacred music, and tackles Obrecht’s rich, sensuous textures and tangy dissonances with both purity and robustness. The long “amen” in the motet O beate Basili, on disc for the first time, is especially splendid.

Out of Balance April 6, 2018 By Michael Eckert (Iowa City, IA) See All My Reviews "Based on other recordings by the Brabant Ensemble I had high expectations of this CD, especially since the Missa Grecorum has not been recorded before. But listening with the score of the New Obrecht Edition reveals serious balance problems in the four-voice sections of the Missa Grecorum and O Beate Basili, where notes at the lower ranges of the superius and altus parts are largely inaudible: a good deal of motivic interplay between the upper parts, a salient feature of Obrecht’s playful if not quirky approach to counterpoint, simply isn’t audible. Meanwhile the long notes of the tenor (such as in the Credo of the mass) are often projected as if they should be in the foreground. As with much music of the late 15th century, the vocal ranges of the superius and altus parts in the mass are low relative to the ranges of modern soprano and alto parts, but a choral director taking on this repertoire has to find solutions to create a reasonable balance among all the parts; unfortunately that does not happen often enough on this recording."
