Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Bruckner recordings with Dennis Russell Davies and the Bruckner Orchester Linz have previously been available on the former BMG budget label ARTE NOVA. For the first time the complete cycle is now available in a representative clamshell box at a bargain price. This symphony cycle was recorded live between the years 2003 and 2008. This is, without doubt, one of Dennis Russell Davies’ most important undertakings during his time with the Bruckner Orchester Linz. With the completion of the complete collection, Davies has become the only conductor who has recorded the complete symphonies of Haydn, Bruckner, and Glass.

Bruckner: Symphony No 8

Davies really has the measure of the music, offering a broad account of the first movement with powerful climaxes, but a swift, lively rendition of the ensuing scherzo, which suits its unrevised character better than a slower, heavier approach. Both the adagio and finale have the necessary weight, but they never drag. The orchestral brass understands what Bruckner needs: a majestic chorale but plenty of timbral differentiation between horns, trumpets, and trombones.

Bruckner: Symphony No. 4

Davies turns in a distinguished performance that demands comparison with the classic 1973 Karl Böhm/Vienna Philharmonic recording. The leaner, rhythmically incisive performance by Davies and the BOL is as well suited to Bruckner's first version as Böhm's is to the final one. The playing is solid; the string sound, while not ravishing, is firm yet flexible. The woodwinds are full of character, while the brass exhibit a very effective mixture of Austrian solidity and American brilliance.

Not Exactly "Complete". January 25, 2018 By J. Jensen (VIENNA, Austria) See All My Reviews "Beautifully played live in concert and recorded...my sole disappointment was that this set did not include Bruckner's very first symphony, the so-called "Study Symphony in F" which was written even before "Die Nullte" Symphony."  Excellent readings, good value, good playing December 28, 2017 By Louis Galie (Leander, TX) See All My Reviews "Davies has a real feel for Bruckner. The Linz orchestra also does a great job. Highly recommended." Report Abuse
