Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is absolutely wonderful stuff. Replete with musical moments of wonder and thrills, and played with great joie de vivre, the Haydn Cello Concertos show off the star solo cellist and the ensemble to greatest advantage. The disc's additional offerings, contemporaneous works by some of the composer's contemporaries, are rendered in idiomatic and delightful fashion. This is a album well worth acquiring, whether you yet own a recording of Haydn's two masterful Cello Concertos or your collection is bulging with them.

CD decline? May 1, 2018 By Phillip S. (College Park, MD) See All My Reviews "Performance okay. Recording inferior. I have the impression at age 83 that older CDs are generally better than newer CDs, despite so-called remastering. This recording might have been better if the cello soloist had been more closely recorded instead of recorded as merely part of the ensemble. I should add, however, that my CD player is old and has never been especially good. Naxos CDs, to my surprise, are generally better than other labels, especially in terms of recording." Report Abuse
