Notes and Editorial Reviews

It was Robert Schumann who praised the Anglo-French Georges Onslow, alongside Mendelssohn, as one of the successors to the chamber music legacy of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. His string quintets were intended for a market of cultivated amateurs, with parts for a second cello or bass. No. 10 in F minor, Op. 32 reflects Beethoven’s influence, its Sturm und Drang elements revealing a masterly balance between the stable and unpredictable. No. 22 in E flat major, lively and playful, offers an almost Schubertian songfulness. Of the first volume, Gramphone wrote: ‘these five players make a beguiling case for this music.’ The combination of string quartet with double bass has opened up a richness of tone and distinct soundscape that the Elan Read more Quintet has dedicated to exploring, celebrating works by renowned composers such as Schubert, Dvorak and Cambini, working with contemporary artists in creating new works for quintet, and rediscovering neglected masterpieces by composers including Onslow and Bridge. The members of the Elan Quintet, Benjamin Scherer Quesada, Lelia Iancovici, Julia Chu-Ying Hu, Dmitri Tsirin, and Matthew Baker, formed the ensemble in Valencia in 2014 having worked with each other extensively in the opera orchestra of the Palau de les Arts as well as in masterclasses and in chamber music.  A Fine Recording November 25, 2017 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "The impressive list of compositions by the French-English composer Georges Onslow includes 34 string quintets, which appear to be the objective of a new Naxos recording project. This is Volume 2 in the series and consists of String Quintets #10 and #22, dating respectively from 1827 and 1837. Onslow may well have been influenced by composers such as Beethoven, as his quintets demonstrate a high degree of late Classical Era/early Romantic Era sophistication, with plenty of dramatic interplay among the instruments and engaging melodic content emerging from well-thought out counterpoint. Played by the excellent Elan Quintet, these quintets are indeed a distinct pleasure to hear, as the addition of a double bass as the 5th instrument provides an extra touch of depth to the ensemble's sound. In short, this is a very fine new Naxos recording; the sound is crystal clear, sharply articulated and balanced throughout the entire program. Chamber music lovers should really like this recording, and I highly recommend it." Report Abuse
