In July of 1960 Dmitri Shostakovich composed his famous String Quartet No. 8 in C minor, Op. 110 in the small spa resort of Gohrisch in ''Saxon Switzerland'' national park. The quartet is the only work Shostakovich composed outside the Soviet Union. To commemorate the visit by Shostakovich, in 2010, exactly 50 years later, the International Shostakovich Festival in Gohrisch was established. Since then, the festival has attracted concert-goers from around the world to the spa resort near the Elbe River.
