Notes and Editorial Reviews

Together with his friend Holst, at the beginning of the 20th century Ralph Vaughan Williams deliberately took the course of liberating himself from ''German influence'', as they called it, working for original British music. He found models and inspiration in original English folk music. Most of the works recorded here rank among the less known pieces by the composer, but all of them very clearly reflect the personal hue, the absolutely ''personal style'' of Ralph Vaughan Williams.  A Welcome Compilation January 27, 2018 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "There are several sides to Ralph Vaughan Williams' musical style presented in this new Capriccio recording with the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz. An opera overture (The Poisoned Kiss) and a film score suite (The England of Elizabeth) are pleasant bookends around three works which clearly exhibit Vaughan Williams' pastoral tendencies through the use of English folk melodies (Fantasia on Sussex Folk Tunes, Bucolic Suite, and In the Fen Country). This is unmistakably British music and is definitely not associated with or derived from the Continental European tradition, as the CD notes discuss in an excellent short essay. Each of these five works has its own character, and this of course means that personal taste dictates how one reacts to each one. For this reviewer, the most attractive portions of the program were the rustic Bucolic Suite (1900) and the 3-sectioned film suite (The England of Elizabeth), although the other works are immediately accessible and of substantial quality. One might think that a British orchestra would be the logical choice to perform this program, but Germany's Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz does an excellent job under Karl-Heniz Steffens. Perhaps this simply proves the point that classical music is truly a universal cultural expression. In short, this is a thoroughly enjoyable recording and well worth exploring. Recommended."
