The “fabulous Elina Garanca sings beautifully and
Read more emotionally restrained, leaving the audience deeply moved during her dying scene”, while Matthew Polenzani, in his debut as Fernand, scores with superb singing and acting, “reaching high tones with ease” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Mariusz Kwiecien “convinces with the proper dandified arrogance and impressive acting”, while conductor Karel Mark Chichon completes the musically fantastic performance by “getting the most out of the Bayerische Staatsorchester, impressively bringing out the dark, viscous sounds of the score and following the soloists with great intuition.” (BR Klassik) Read less

Not a favorite after all November 18, 2020 By Stephanie M. (Jamaica Plain, MA) See All My Reviews "This recording was a big disappointment. The music is beautiful, the wonderful cast sings extremely well, but the production is simply unpleasant. Most scenes are so dark you can hardly see what is happening, and the update of a medieval story to the present day does not work in this case. For just one example, the scenes in the monastery come across as quite sinister, which is not the intention of the libretto. The transition between scenes is confusing. The characters are constantly throwing themselves(or others) into painful-looking positions, often on the ground. I would rather have had it as a CD." Report Abuse
La Favorite November 24, 2018 By E. Jones (Apache Junction, AZ) See All My Reviews "Music is wonderful - Garanca always captivates. Production is a bad updating but the singers keep your attention away from the setting - except when the director has her throwing chairs around the room! Polezani's singing/acting melt your heart."
