Notes and Editorial Reviews

It is with children in mind that I recorded these French Suites, always having heartfelt simplicity and purity in their mind. Children see the world with hope, optimism, and cast in light – much like Miró sees the world. I find a childlike purity in him, similar to what I hear in the French Suites. There is a quote by Miró that touches me enormously and makes me think a lot whenever I play, as it reflects something that may be the most difficult aspect of musical interpretation – and of art in general: To gain freedom is to gain simplicity.'' (Zhu Xiao-Mei) Zhu Xiao-Mei was born in 1949 in Shanghai. She began performing early, playing on Beijing radio and television when she was only 8. When she was ten she entered the Read more National School of Music for exceptionally gifted children. She came to America in 1979, attending the New England Conservatory in Boston. Currently, she teaches at the Conservatoire de Paris. Read less

Press review December 11, 2017 By Classicalacarte Classicalacarte (Saint-Donat, QC) See All My Reviews "A tremendous recording of Bach's six keyboard works entitled "French Suites" although bach never gave a title to these compositions. This recording received very positive reviews from both French magazines - Diapason (5 stars) and Classica (4 stars). BBC Music Magazine selected the recording as a monthly choice (Instrumental) in September 2017 (5 stars). Dominy Clements wrote a very elogious commentary for Music Web International (11/2017): "With carefully placed and restrained amounts of ornamentation, Xiao-Mei’s overall approach to these French Suites has been one that brings out their essential simplicity ..." . Peter Burwasser (Fanfare, 41:3 (Jan/Feb 2018) is also taken up by Xiao-Mei's approah : "My highest compliment to Zhu Xiao-Mei is that as I was listening to her performance, my amazement at the beauty and profundity of Bach was constantly aroused'.
