Notes and Editorial Reviews

The full grandeur, passion and nobility of Saint-Saëns’ biblical drama is embodied in the interpretations of two supreme singers of their era, Jon Vickers and Rita Gorr – as remarkable for their powerful personalities as for their vocal splendour – and of conductor Georges Prêtre. Idiomatic style is further guaranteed by Ernest Blanc as the High Priest of Dagon, the orchestra of the Paris Opéra and, as both oppressed Hebrews and exultant Philistines, the Chśurs René Duclos.  Dramaic all the way ! July 21, 2017 By Joseph Erdeljac (West Chester, PA) See All My Reviews "This recording is exceptional in 3 of its principal singers. Rita Gorr's rich and earthly vocal color is perfect in the role of Delila. She captures all the power and seductiveness of the music and character. Jon Vickers dark dramatic timbre is perfect and portrays all the passion of his calling and struggles. Ernest Blanc is well suited to the role of the High Priest and proves equal to the others in his vocal powers. The power and beauty of this opera is extremely dramatic and exciting. Saint-Saens has created a wonderfully romantic, and powerfully emotional opera. The orchestra is well recorded never overpowering the singers under the leadership of Georges Pretre." Report Abuse
