Notes and Editorial Reviews

In 1896 The Strad described Charles Auguste de Bériot, whose playing created a sensation in London and Paris, as 'the founder of the modern Franco-Belgian school'. His Violin Concertos include plenty of innovative features, such as ricochet bowing, double-stops and harmonics. These techniques and other innovations in formal structure are, however, all in the service of expressive communication and stylish elegance. The romantic Scène de ballet is perhaps Bériot's best known work, while the Air Varié, Op. 5 follows a long tradition of writing variations on popular themes.  NIce Program August 31, 2018 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "The three violin concertos of Charles-Auguste de Beriot on this Naxos recording are all quite short, ranging in length from 13 to 18 minutes. Nevertheless, they all contain high quality writing for the violin and orchestra and together form a solid program that should sustain interest throughout. Soloist Ayana Tsuji has a nice light touch, guaranteeing that the solo violin passages integrate very well with the orchestral accompaniment. Speaking of the orchestra, the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra provides superb backing for Ms. Tsuji- restrained and always under control, resulting in a fresh, lyrical base for the soloist's work. As appealing as I found the concertos to be, I think the real highlights on the program are the final two tracks- Air varie #4 and Scene de ballet, which the CD notes assert is Beriot's most popular work. In summary, this Belgian-born composer bequeathed to the musical world a number of excellent works for violin and orchestra that fit nicely into the mid-19th century tradition. A fine effort, one that I unhesitatingly recommend." Report Abuse
