Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is a double album, honoring the 80th birthday of the minimal music pioneer, Steve Reich. Reich is one of the most influential composers of our time and a key founder of the minimalist school of music. This album is not only a celebration of Reich's birthday but also a result of a 3-year-project that started with his residency as "composer in residence" at the MDR Radio Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra-chors versions of "Daniel" and "You Are Variations" are world premiere recordings. "Duet" was dedicated to and written for Sir Yehudi Menuhin for his 80th birthday while "Clapping Music" is performed by Steve Reich himself alongside Kristjan Järvi.

Järvi's enthusiasm for the project is palpable here, most obviously in the live performance of the early Reich standard Clapping Music, which he and the composer perform together to the approval of the crowd. This is a major breakthrough for the octogenarian composer, in a musically hallowed city far from his American homeland, in a place where he must find it uniquely satisfying to score a triumph.

Big Band Reich January 5, 2017 By Christopher  Abbot (Chilmark, MA) See All My Reviews "Beginning in 1979, and into the 1980s, Steve Reich received a succession of orchestral commissions which allowed him to expand his soundworld into a realm that hitherto seemed an unlikely fit. This stage of Reich's career only produced four works (an orchestral version of Different Trains was also produced, but was not successful); by the 1990s, Reich had publicly renounced the traditional orchestra in favor of smaller, amplified ensembles that suited such newer pieces as City Life. However, this Sony release introduces a new wrinkle: Reich has reworked two of his ensemble pieces into choral/orchestral works of greater heft; to commemorate his work with the MDR Symphony of Leipzig and their conductor Kristjan Jarvi, these two now join The Four Sections and the wonderful miniature Duet to complement Jarvi's earlier disc (on Chandos) of The Desert Music and Three Movements (the Sony set is completed with Clapping Music, a minor but benign encore piece). I find Reich's choral work, with one major exception, to be repetitive, declamatory and generally overblown, and comparisons of these new ones with their original versions only reinforces that assessment. The exception is The Desert Music, and Jarvi's Chandos disc is a superb addition to the Reich discography, and a decent alternative to Michael Tilson Thomas's premiere recording on Nonesuch, especially since the Chandos is in SACD surround sound."
