Notes and Editorial Reviews

A 6-CD box set devoted to recordings of Spanish guitar music by one of its finest exponents. “No one apart from his mentor Segovia has done more to enhance the standing of the guitar than Julian Bream,” observed BBC Music Magazine. Gramophone’s John Duarte, perhaps the most authoritative critic of guitar performance, stated: “No living guitarist can ‘sell’ this music so persuasively as Bream, who starts from a base of affection and conviction; indeed, a comparison with recordings of these pieces by others provides a definition of ‘style’ to anyone in need of one.” A 6-CD box set devoted to recordings of Spanish guitar music by one of its finest exponents. “No one apart from his mentor Segovia has done more to enhance the standing of the guitar than Julian Bream,” observed BBC Music Magazine.  Next Generation Segovia April 15, 2018 By Alva Almand (Gainesville, GA) See All My Reviews "Julian Bream has the same precision and tonal quality of Segovia in his prime. This set takes you through many of the best Spanish Guitar solos every composed. This is a MUST for any classical music collection." Report Abuse
Excellent box of one one guitar's greatest January 28, 2018 By v. hamon (los angeles, CA) See All My Reviews "Along with Andres Segovia, Julian Bream deserves praise for taking the guitar seriously on the concert stage. Largely self-thought, Bream is known for both his Bach and Spanish composers interpretations. This 6-cd set focuses on the Spanish pieces, and it's mostly a winner. His technique is clean and the feeling for the music profound. The recording range from around 1962 to the late 80s. Two of the earlier pieces (all by Joaquin Turina) suffered from distant, canned sound. The disk includes Concierto oe Aranjuez. Here I found the orchestral part the best part; the guitar, on the other hand, sounds too distant. The balance is better on Fantasia para un Gentilhombre. Note that one disk consists entirely of Bream playing the lute. Some of those pieces are represented in later recording with the guitar. The disks are housed in individual cardboard sleeves. There's no booklet with background information, which is too bad. But considering the price, forgivable." Report Abuse
