Sylvain Blassel plays an Erard, a glorious silvery sound, though its 100 year old pedal mechanism clatters in extreme chromatic moments (Variation 17). He has a sensitive and expressive touch to respond to the contrapuntal details. Imitations are clearly pointed and the canon's logic is always clear, especially in the inverted canons (one voice answered by the second upside-down), before the central point, a fine French Ouverture.

Blassel plays many of the variations without intervening pauses, generating a sense of constant growth and development. His tonal contrasts are breath taking, Variation 5 fast and sotto voce, Variation 27 a wraith-like whisper. He is also joined by Fabrice Pierre in 14 brief canons on the same
