Notes and Editorial Reviews

A moving and authentic documentary with lots of archive material, this is an important document of the Stalin era. The documentary shows the cruelty of the suppression in the Stalin era as well as the cruelty of World War II and the siege of Leningrad. It shows Shostakovich's desperate struggle to survive in this totalitarian regime. Interview partners such as Valery Gergiev give valuable insight into the life of this iconic Russian artist. The film is a testimony of how the arts can and must be a significant weapon against totalitarianism and extremism.  Excellent Documentary! September 22, 2017 By John Weisenfluh (Harrisburg, PA) See All My Reviews "Certainly worth revisiting, I plan to send copies to musician-friends. In some of the historical clips, one may take offense to the unedited violence. However, remarkable insight has been shown into Shostakovich's concern for humanity. It is wonderful to see contributions from other composers of the period. The musical illustrations are wonderful." Report Abuse
