Notes and Editorial Reviews

This outstanding five-disc set includes the first 8 of Beethoven’s symphonies, as well as his “Coriolan” and “Egmont” Overtures. All of these works are performed by the Filarmonica della Scala, conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini. Giulini studied at Italy’s finest conservatory at the time, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Giulini gained a reputation as a masterful conductor of opera. He was also a noted interpreter of Beethoven.

“This is a throwback to an older style of Beethoven playing… The sound is massive, full, and beautifully blended… [The performances] have a wonderfully spacious quality, and the slowish tempi allow the inner parts to sound with unusual clarity.” (BBC Music Magazine)

Beautiful Rendition January 11, 2018 By Randall Johnston See All My Reviews "I write this review exposing my deep admiration for Carlo Maria Giulini's recordings we are so fortunate to have. This compilation is straight forward, without any idiosyncratic interpretation. It is easy to enjoy, and it is with significant energy and passionate range to imbue Beethoven's much discussed intentions. I am not a professional reviewer. I am simply a collector and obsessive listener to Beethoven's Symphonic cycles for almost 55 years. The Filarmonica della Scala does a 1st class presentation, and I encourage Beethoven enthusiasts to give this budget set a listen. I believe that you will be impressed. Although a bit soft and personal, in some respects it reminds me of Gunter Wand's excellent recordings. I own over 60 full Beethoven cycle recordings either on vinyl, CD or both. This sits with the top echelon of these recordings. Only 4 stars because the 9th is not included, although he did record this symphony with other emsembles. Otherwise it merits a 5 star performance!
