Notes and Editorial Reviews

This collection is very much in the grand Italian tenor tradition of recording set by Caruso and Gigli. The face-to-face quality in the singing and the presentation is brought out the more intensely in this CD version of an original analogue recording. This is a record for those who revel in Pavarotti's golden tones and not for those who look for a degree of purism. He tends to belt everything out too hard—this tenor version of Gluck's Chefaro sounds more like Handel done in the oldfashioned way—but that brings glorious results in the little Leoncavallo song that gives the collection its title (with delightful orchestral trimmings from Alexander Fans). Most memorable is the gentle opening of Caro mio ben, where for once Pavarotti presents a Read more musical caress. The unexpected Beethoven item is restrained too. The placing of the orchestra well behind the voice is the more apparent on CD, but the sense of presence is greater.
