"Solti's first cycle with his own Chicago Orchestra has a firm centrality to it, following the outstandingly successful version of the Ninth with which he started the series. The performance of the Eroica has comparable qualities, with expansive, steady tempi and a dedicated, hushed account of the slow movement. The CD transfers bring an admirable consistency, with plenty of weight in the bass balancing the bright top register. At bargain price, Solti admirers should not miss this set, particularly as these performances are more satisfying than those in his later, digital series." - PENGUIN GUIDE, 2003/04 Edition Recorded 1972 and 1974. The Best EverApril 3, 2012By Richard H. (Glendale, AZ)See All My Reviews"This cycle of the big nine by Solti and CSO is far and away my favorite. Solti understands Beethoven and gives the music all the attention it deserves in every aspect. The quiet passages are perfectly executed and the slam bang Beethoven is never bridled or abridged. All the repeats are taken and the instruments in the orchestra are the ones that are written for by the composer. Unlike Karajan, Solti takes his ego out of it and doesn't attempt to be more clever than Beethoven. This set is a must for any serious Beethoven fan."Report Abuse
