Notes and Editorial Reviews

This was Janowitz's first solo recital record, and one marvels not just at the purity of tone and silken vocal line but also a refinement of style that marks out a fully formed artist.

Evidently DG know gold when they see it. Barely more than a year after these Mozart concert arias were included on a two-disc "Gundula Janowitz: Portrait" (DG, 12/95), here they are again, returning in The Originals series. An 'original' is exactly what this disc is, as it reproduces Janowitz's first solo recital record, issued in 1967. Listening back, we can marvel not just at the purity of tone and silken vocal line, but also a refinement of style that marks out a fully formed artist. The highlights include a delicate Vado,
Read more ma dove? and a performance of Bella mia fiatnma which lights up the music with the subtlest of colours from within. Some of the recitatives might have been more dramatic, but Wilfried Boettcher and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra provide alert accompaniments. There is also a bonus: the original LP did not have room for the ravishing G minor lament "Betracht dies Herz" from the Grabmusik, K42, and that is now issued for the first time here, a minor treasure in its own right.
