Notes and Editorial Reviews

"...Another new release of unfamiliar modern piano music that is beautifully performed and worth knowing...Surprisingly appealing are Morton Gould's late (1985) Pieces of China, described in the program notes as an American's impressions of China. But these six sketches strike me more as a French jazz pianist's impressions of China."

-- Fanfare,

With Poems for Piano, pianist Mirian Conti brings to the catalogue a collection of previously unrecorded works by twentieth-century American composers. With the exception of David Diamond's two brief Sonatinas, all of the pieces are programmatic. Each of Vincent Persichetti's 'Poems for Piano' is an evocation of a single line of poetry; Morton Gould's
Read more 'Pieces of China' have titles like "The great wall" and "Puppets;" and Ernst Bloch's 'Poems of the Sea' are impressionist tone paintings in the spirit of Debussy's 'La mer.'

Conti's experience in and comfort with this repertoire is evident from the first track, as soon as she begins Gould's driving, jazzy picture of China's Great Wall. She carries off Persichetti's poetry with grace and ease, capturing both the dreamy qualities of "Sleep, weary mind; dream, heart's desire" (Edna St. Vincent Millay) and the dancing of "Each gay dunce shall lend a hand" (John Trumbull).

Aside from bringing the music of non-academic modern composers to disc, Poems for Piano does a great service to American music in demonstrating that there's more to it than just Copland, Barber, and Bernstein. In both content and performance, Conti's program is an engaging listen from start to finish.
