The 1984 account from Schreier and his German forces is a triumph. Beautifully performed and impressively recorded, it exemplifies an enlightened approach to interpretation in which the lessons of scholarship are judiciously applied to performance on modern instruments. Tempos are dancelike, textures lighter, more animated, less stately.
