Notes and Editorial Reviews

Appearing here in her début solo album, Italian lyric soprano Maria Luigia Borsi is acclaimed for her “grace, beauty, animation and variety” (The Sunday Times). Her “Willow Song” from Verdi’s Otello has been described as “gorgeously sung” (Opera News) and her role in Puccini’s Turandot as demonstrating “extraordinary communicative skills” (Opera Magazine). This program includes some of the most moving and dramatic arias from Italian opera, including the tragic heartbreak of Madama Butterfly and the shimmering beauty of Catalani’s “Ebben? Ne andrò lontana” from La Wally. Appearing here in her début solo album, Italian lyric soprano Maria Luigia Borsi is acclaimed for her “grace, beauty, animation and variety” (The Sunday Times).  Stunning singing from Ms. Borsi – WOW!!! September 28, 2014 By Warren Harris See All My Reviews "This disc, which is Ms. Borsi’s debut solo album, features the soprano performing works from Respighi, Verdi, Catalani, and 6 works of Puccini, accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Yves Abel. And it is stunning. I was captivated from the first note to the last, and the opening track (Respighi’s “Il tramonto”) was wonderful, but particularly noteworthy for me was Puccini’s “Un bel di vedremo (Act 2)” from Madama Butterfly (soooo difficult not to tear up, this is so well performed). The Verdi selections from Otello (including the “Willow Song”) were similarly moving. And I can’t say enough about Liu’s aria “Signore, ascolta” from Turandot, “Donde lieta usci” from Act 3 of La Boheme (again, sooooo well performed, it is heart wrenching), and “Chi il bel sogno di Doretta” from La Rondine is simply gorgeous, and Ms. Borsi nails it – I found myself envious of the recording engineers and orchestra members that got to hear this live. But all that being said, Catalani’s “Ebben? Ne andro lontana” from La Wally is unbelievable, Ms. Borsi giving this particular listener an often sought emotional experience. The recording closes with a lovely version of Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro” that is definitely worth hearing. The London Symphony Orchestra w/ Yves Abel at the podium is excellent, and the recording quality is clear and warm. This recording calls for a high-end audiophile stereo system, and I will give it that treatment here in the next few weeks. I felt drained in a positive way after listening to it, it had such a powerful effect on me. Very highly recommended -- *amazing*." Report Abuse
