Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Kuijken's versions of Bach's violin concertos and orchestral suites are at or near the top of my lists for those works, but the present recording is Kuijken's first, to the best of my knowledge, of vocal music. Kuijken's chorus, the Nederlands Kamerkoor, consists of seven sopranos (all female), five altos (mixed), and four each of tenors and basses; La Petite Bande is, of course, an original-instruments ensemble. Kuijken approaches both of these works deliberately, with tempos consistently slower than those of Gardiner, Rifkin, or Parrott in the Magnificat or Herreweghe and, for the most part, Harnoncourt in the cantata. The results are a resounding success in the Magnificat... Kuijken meticulously shapes a Magnificat that is vivid, Read more tender, and dramatic in turn, building to a powerful culmination in the Gloria Patri. One surprise from Kuijken is the dotting of the rhythm in the soprano aria, “Quia respexit.“ Among the soloists, basso Lika (Quia fecit) is most impressive; countertenor Jacobs contributes a moving Esurientes...Virgin's recording is topnotch.

BWV 21 is one of Bach's best-loved cantatas, composed, around 1714 “for any time of the year“ (and thus has no chorale). It is the most extensive of the Weimar cantatas, through-composed, and also one of the most inventive and expressive of all Bach's church cantatas. It must have been one of the composer's favorites; he revived it several times during his career."
