Notes and Editorial Reviews

The preeminent contralto Nathalie Stutzman performs the music of Schumann with an innate sensibility. Certainly the focus of this recording is her lively interpretations of the Op. 40 'Fünf Lieder,' set to texts by none other than Hans Christian Andersen. Written in the course of four days, these songs take Andersen's texts to another place, and give them a new dimension. Add in the richly textured voice of Stutzman and you've got a performance of grand proportions. Beginning with the beguiling "Märzveilchen," sweetly sung and understated, to the intense "Der Spielmann," with its twists, turns, and somber tone, Stutzman has the ability to tell a story and sing a song simultaneously. This, believe it or not, is not so simple or Read more straightforward. Schumann was one of the great lied writers of the romantic period in music. Text was of the utmost importance to him, as was the piano accompaniment, which greatly enhanced the world of the song. Pianist Inger Södergren perfectly compliments Stutzman, and through the course of this disc we hear the results of a great musical collaboration. Read less
