Notes and Editorial Reviews

"It would be unfair to call the performances rough and ready; but there is a certain absence of surface polish, and I find that by no means unpleasing in this youthfully spirited music. Kehr often brings a straightforward vigour to the quick or medium-quick movements that is appropriate to their directness of expression. The first movement of K19, for example, is happily done, with its contrasts neatly made, but in K22 the mini-crescendos blunt the effect of the sharp fortes. The Symphony in F K43 goes well, properly a little more expansive in manner, and the striding vigour of K48 is nicely caught... The Symphony in G K74, a spirited Italianate piece, is done in lively fashion. In the slow movements Kehr finds the proper galant Read more expressive vein, notably in K19, K43 (a beautiful little movement, with a halo of flute tone and a ticking viola accompaniment to a charming violin melody), K45b (a particularly expressive Andante, though not specially typical), K73 (a tender piece, again with flutes), and the shapely little Andantino of K75. He tends to take the minuets on the slow side (K43, 48, 75), which if a fault is probably one in the right direction. In several of the finales a touch more of lightness and wit would sometimes be welcome, though the robust one in K45b and the contredanse-like ones in K73 and 74 go well."
