Believe it or not, here at last is a set that can be recommended all through... More than any conductor in this repertoire since Klemperer, van Zweden brings the wind into democratic equality with the strings. He also goes for an almost organ-like equality of balancing of the wind choir, rather than "soloing-out" the instrument which has the tune... I think this is the first time I have reviewed a Brahms cycle and not adopted a symphony-by-symphony approach. This is a tribute to van Zweden’s consistency – there is no need here to separate the good from the bad. Furthermore, I had the impression at the end that van Zweden had played the entire cycle of symphoniesRead more like one gigantic symphony in four movements, an inexorable progress towards the heroic but uncompromising fourth.
-- Christopher Howell, MusicWeb International
Violin Concerto
The ambience of the Grünewald Kirche, Berlin conveys a fine body of tone to the Berlin Philharmonic and is flattering to the soloist. The performance is quite marvellous, demonstrating Menuhin's nobility of line at its most impressive: the reading has breadth, humanity and spontaneity.
-- Ivan March, Gramophone [11/1991]
Clarinet Sonatas
Karl Leister is one of the world’s foremost clarinetists, having performed for many years as principal clarinet with the Berlin Philharmonic. In general, his tone is very mellow without the stridency that is typical of some clarinetists. Yet it does not preclude boldness when that is called for... The balance between clarinet and piano here is exemplary... Ferenc Bognár proves to be an excellent Brahmsian, with clear articulation and appropriate weighting of the bass notes... the performances and recording here are as good as any I’ve heard.
-- Leslie Wright, MusicWeb International
Piano Quartets
...these performances on Brilliant Classics are topnotch, the recordings have held up well... it’s an irresistible bargain for any Brahms-lover.
-- Jerry Dubins, FANFARE [5/2007]
Piano Quintet and Horn Trio
It would be hard to imagine more amiable performances of these two strongly characterized Brahms works...intense as well as warm, plainly derived from long experience performing this music in concert... The romanticism of the Nash approach comes out particularly strongly in the opening Andante of the Horn Trio, with the horn soloist, Frank Lloyd, producing exceptionally rich, braying tone to remind one of Dennis Brain. After relaxed accounts of the first three movements the galloping finale is then given with great panache, conveying more fun than the more virtuoso reading from Ashkenazy, Perlman and Tuckwell.
-- Edward Greenfield, Gramophone
Viola Sonatas
[Nobuko Imai's] subtle range of nuance, as in the lighter bowing required in the Andante of the F minor Sonata, lends a grace to everything she does. The humour of the finale of this work is nicely caught without any coyness... this is a disc of real merit regarding the actual performances.
-- James Methuen-Campbell, Gramophone [10/1987]
Works for solo piano
The success of these recordings is in no small part due to the measured and precise approach of each of the artists. There are plenty of performance directions in Brahms' scores, which you can ignore, but by presenting exactly what is on the page, while avoiding pedantry, these pianists present some enjoyable and wholly musical readings... The early piano sonatas are performed by Kemerhan Turan and Alan Weiss, and both give impressively nuanced readings... Håkon Austbø...too avoids excesses of interpretation, although he shapes the phrases with a little more rubato than his colleagues. For me, these two discs are the highlight of the set... The flamboyant virtuoso approach has its place, but to my ear, this music responds just as well to the more measured and diligent readings of these five pianists.

This Set Will Invite Many ComparisonsJuly 6, 2014By J. Cartwright (TUCSON, AZ)See All My Reviews"First, this set is important to me, for adding a number of primarily instrumental works, to what I had been able to find up 'til now. It will take (anyone!) some time to listen through all the Opus numbers, but I have been so very highly pleased with some of the works, that I truly wish to thank the "Brilliant" people for the effort which brought us this edition. Secondly, the total works of Johannes Brahms deserve to be available to the world, for the beauty of his art is astounding. Thirdly, people who have enjoyed a number of the composer's works performed by well-known performers, will now have performance comparisons as well as untold hours of happy listening."Report Abuse
