Notes and Editorial Reviews

To sustain a career for 40 years is a remarkable achievement for any singer, exceptionally so for a tenor. Hugues Cuénod, who was still amazing audiences with 'things that it amuses my voice to sing' well into his eighties, is an exception to every rule; Tito Schipa stayed before the public for 46 years, but with a lighter voice and in a less demanding repertory than Pavarotti's. While Pavarotti can show off no high C in this collection, his upper register is still free enough for a full-voiced B natural or a triumphant B flat. He has lost little of his sense of long-spanned, finely sustained line, and it is surely not merely caution that leads him now to make extensive use of a crooning head voice and of intimate mezza voce shadings Read more and to take such evident pleasure in the varieties of covered tone that can be drawn from the first syllable of the word 'luna' (in Tosti's Lana d'esare). However the title of this collection is misleading; it is not so much a live recital as a selection of items recorded at a number of recitals. The voice is recorded very closely, perhaps to diminish the distraction of moving from one acoustic to another (it cannot disguise the fact that Leone Magiera plays at least three different pianos, not all of them of the highest quality) and listening to Pavarotti at a range of about three feet does reveal or even exaggerate the fact that here and there he does sound his age: a phrase cautiously approached, a high note prepared with a longer pause than heretofore and the vocal equivalent of crossed fingers, a hint of tarnish to the tone, of effort or strain hidden by charm and professionalism. All the more praiseworthy, then, that he should include the five Bellini songs (not so demanding as many of that composer's arias, but they insist on the most limpid cantabile); all the more engaging that he chooses no fewer than nine by Tosti because he so obviously enjoys them. Marechiare and after it the Rigoletto aria are obviously the encores, and in them one hears the old trouper delighted to be called back once again.
