Notes and Editorial Reviews

If you enjoyed Volume 1 of this very entertaining series of Vivaldi's Concerti con molti strumenti ("with lots of instruments") then you will find this successor equally appealing. The major item is the Concerto Grosso RV562a, for violin, 2 horns, 2 oboes, 2 more violins, "alto viola con basso", and timpani. At nearly 17 minutes, it's a major work, and the playing of the soloists is very beautiful, particularly the principal violin and oboes. The timpanist also has a nice, clear tone that gives the music additional heft and rhythmic incisiveness, without noisy banging. RV566 requires 2 violins, 2 "flauti diritti", 2 oboes, and bassoon, while RV569 employs violin, 2 oboes, bassoon, and two horns. The remaining works are less ambitious in Read more scale but no less imaginative: viola d'amore and lute; violin and 2 cellos; 4 violins. And there's one odd man out, RV413 for solo cello, that technically may not fit the program but nevertheless makes an effective contrast. All told, there's more than 76 minutes of fine music-making from Fabio Biondi and his crack team of period-performance specialists. It's all excellently recorded, and well worth your time.
