Notes and Editorial Reviews

Rhythm of a jazzy sort is at the heart of "Prelude, Fugue and Riffs," the virtuosic score Bernstein composed for Benny Goodman, and it drives the companion works on the disc: most notably the “On the Town” dances and sections of "Fancy Free." But even when rhythm holds the spotlight, melody exerts a strong tug in Bernstein’s music, nowhere more than in his songs.

GREAT PRFORMANCES! May 17, 2015 By Zita Carno (Tampa, FL) See All My Reviews "Recently I've been acquiring some CDs featuring a work which I enjoyed playing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic when I was with that orchestra, and this is one of them---Bernstein's Prelude, Fugue and Riffs. I remember our principal clarinetist, Michele Zukovsky, as the soloist in the Riffs, and I took the piano part of course, and we all just had a blast---besides we had a number of players who had a real thing for jazz (brass and saxes), and we played this work with Lenny conducting. We also did the suite from On the Town on the same program---not to mention the suite from On The Waterfront, and believe me, there's nothing like performing these works with the composer conducting!"
