TCHAIKOVSKY Two Pieces, Op. 1. Three Pieces, Op. 9. Six Pieces on a Single Theme, Op. 21. Three Impromptus Andrey Yaroshinsky (pn) NAXOS 8.573086 (59:19)

This CD is part of Naxos’s “Artist Laureate” series; the 27-year-old pianist Andrey Yaroshinsky has won several competitions, including most recently the 2011 Gabala International Competition in Azerbaijan. The program he has chosen for this disc is all Tchaikovsky, indeed all early Tchaikovsky, written between 1867 and 1873, except for the three brief Impromptus without opus numbers, which were written in the 1880s; if this portends a complete recording of Tchaikovsky’s piano music, Naxos gives no hint to that effect. Such a series would be welcome: This music is under-recorded. Naxos began a series with Oxana Yablonskaya in the 1990s, but it apparently got only as far as two volumes.

Yaroshinsky is an attractive player, with a good, singing tone and plenty of technique; in the op. 1 pieces he is more subtle and at the same time more dynamic than Viktoria Postnikova, whose complete recording for Erato remains my reference set in the absence of much competition. Naxos’s recording is pleasingly ambient without losing immediacy. This disc is a good way to sample Tchaikovsky’s piano music. Let’s hope Naxos records Yaroshinsky in the later works as well; I’m particularly interested to hear how he does in the big op. 72 set. Worth checking out.
