Dear ArkivMusic Customer,

The incredibly diverse Naxos catalog keeps getting better and better, with more and more of their recordings garnering critical acclaim for both unearthing lost treasures and breathing new life into classic repertoire. Now ArkivMusic has Naxos CDs on sale at 3 for $20* (and MP3s are just $4.99 per "disc") – a great opportunity to grow your collection and expand your horizons.

Here are some of our current top picks from Naxos:

Mozart: Missa Brevis, Regina Coeli, Fantasy / Lucas, St. Albans Cathedral Choirs
A thoroughly recommendable collection of sacred choral music with an excellent quartet of soloists and expert playing from the period-instrument group Sinfonia Verdi.

Holst: Cotswolds Symphony, Japanese Suite / Falletta
The performances are first-rate in all respects – at least as fine as the recorded competition. Falletta gets an enthusiastic response from the Ulster Orchestra, and her interpretive choices sound unerringly right. A fine disc.

Rossini: Complete Overtures Vol 4 / Benda
This volume completes Naxos’s very enjoyable set of all of Rossini's overtures. The performances, as with the other volumes, are full of character and sparkle – crisp, fleet, and shapely, with excellent solo winds nicely balanced against well-coordinated strings.

Weinberg: Symphony No 12 "In Memoriam D. Shostakovich" / Lande
Weinberg’s symphonies are recognized today as a substantial continuation of the Russian tradition. His Twelfth, written in the style and spirit of Shostakovich, is a response to the death of his great friend and supporter of 32 years.

Corigliano: Conjurer, Vocalise / Glennie, Plitmann, Miller, Albany Symphony
Conjurer uses a large range of percussion instruments, pitched and unpitched, brilliantly creating exciting soundscapes of dizzying variety and using those sounds to create music with emotional and dramatic depth. Evelyn Glennie plays with great subtlety and dazzling élan.

Sierra: Sinfonia No 4, Fandangos, Carnaval / Guerrero, Nashville
Sierra’s music is fun, with a personal style at once original and approachable.

Moniuszko: Overtures / Wit, Warsaw
This collection of operatic overtures by Poland's leading 19th-century opera composer is quite charming. The playing and engineering are exemplary.

Ellington: Black, Brown & Beige / Falletta, Buffalo
This top-notch survey of Ellington’s orchestral music is a joy. The performances are just marvelous. Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic catch the music’s “swing” in vivid interpretations of vitality, color, and verve, captured in bright, natural, high-impact sound.

Rodrigo: Guitar Music Vol 2 / Jeremy Jouve
This is the followup to Jérémy Jouve's first volume, hailed as a superb CD of well-crafted gems in a basically tonal style that sounds neither dated nor predictable.

Ghedini: Architetture, Contrappunti, Marinesca e Baccanale / La Vecchia
A great recording. Here we have the music of an Italian composer who definitely marched to the beat of a different drummer. La Vecchia does a splendid job.

Sarasate: Transcriptions for Violin & Piano / Tianwa Yang
The finale to this critically acclaimed series contains some of Sarasate’s greatest transcriptions and arrangements, including delectable Chopin, arrangements inspired by French Baroque violinists, and Sarasate’s own favorite concert piece, Raff’s La fée d’amour.

Tyberg: Symphony No 2, Piano Sonata No 2 / Bidini, Falletta, Buffalo
If this disc doesn’t get wide exposure, then there is no justice in the world. Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic play the heck out of the Symphony, and Naxos’s engineering is lustrous.
