Dear ArkivMusic Customer,

The English Nimbus label, the first in Britain to produce compact discs, has a distinguished and varied catalog. Now ArkivMusic has everything from Nimbus on sale. Be sure to view our selection of titles at mid-price as well as the label's Prima Voce series of historical vocal recordings.

Here are a few highlights from Nimbus:

Schubert: String Quartets / Wihan Quartet
With the most arresting and riveting performance of Schubert's G-Major Quartet I think I’ve ever heard, this disc is a masterful achievement by the Wihan Quartet, and a crucial one that belongs in the library of anyone who takes this music seriously. $13.99

Espla: Music for Piano / Martin Jones
Each short piece carefully captures the intended mood to perfection, from the mesmerizing, almost wandering effect of the Aire andaluz to the simple yet heart-wrenching Canción de cuna. Martin Jones is a very fine advocate of this music. $27.99 (2 CDs)

Purcell: Dido & Aeneas / Flagstad, Schwarzkopf
An amazing rendition. It is fascinating to hear such singers as Flagstad and Schwarzkopf in these roles, and there are some staggeringly good, and touching, moments. An absolute must for anyone interested in opera or who loves this seminal English work. $8.99

Wandering Winds / Wissam Boustany
This disc showcasing the incredible talent of Wissam Boustany, flutist extraordinaire, will bring pleasure every time it is played. The music, from Jordan, France, Peru, Ireland, Japan, and more, is as sublime as the playing. $13.99

George Benjamin: Written On Skin
An essential record of one of the most unforgettable operas of the last decade or two, a work that seems both old-fashioned and fresh. It takes its rightful place among the classics. – The New York Times $13.99 (2 CDs)

Also available: Benjamin: Into the Little Hill

Chausson, Debussy & Rachmaninov Piano Trios
The sensuality is palpable in this performance of Chausson's trio. Coupled with the Debussy and Rachmaninov, this makes for a most attractive package of beautiful playing and excellent recording. $28.99 (2 CDs)

British Guitar Works / Ian Watt
Guitarist Ian Watt sounds completely at home whatever century or style he is playing in. He is technically assured, thoughtful, and unpretentious in this varied and interesting program of English music. $13.99

James P. Johnson: Harlem Symphony, Concerto, Jazz A Mine / Alsop, Concordia Orchestra
"Father of Stride Piano" James P. Johnson's symphonic music is laid bare with exemplary style in this disc of representative works led by Marin Alsop. $8.99

Handel: Acis & Galatea - Arranged by Felix Mendelssohn / Darlington, Oxford Philomusica
In a word, this is magical. There is a freshness about this performance which is wholly enchanting, making this one of the most enjoyable recordings I have heard in a long time. $13.99

Chopin: Complete Nocturnes, Barcarolle / Feltsman
Feltsman’s love for Chopin absolutely comes across in these recordings. You really can’t fake the excitement and affection that suffuse these readings. Feltsman here matches the greatest Chopin performances preserved in recorded sound. $18.99 (2 CDs)

Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann: Clarinet Sonatas / Emma Johnson
This disc is probably the first choice for listeners interested in clarinet music by Brahms, Schumann, and Mendelssohn. It is difficult to imagine these performances being surpassed. $13.99

Haydn a l'Anglaise / Kirkby, Covey-Crump
These Haydn songs given English words (and some vocal arrangements of instrumental movements) are an irresistible curiosity to any Haydn enthusiast, especially with the considerable panache that Emma Kirkby and Rogers Covey-Crump bring to them. A disc that admirably fills a gap you never knew was there. $13.99
