Dear ArkivMusic Customer,

It is always especially wonderful to discover a recording that is truly new and unique, something you've never heard before. It's even better when that recording contains absolutely gorgeous music. Today I have just such a disc to share with you – the latest release on the Steinway & Sons label. At the very least, you must listen to the sound samples.

Fugue State / Alan Feinberg
An excursion into the surprisingly passionate world

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of both Francis Poulenc ("the rascal") and Edith Piaf ("the sparrow"). Now the art of both of these musical icons is brought together for the first time: Poulenc's art songs and songs made famous by Piaf are given a new voice through elegant arrangements for solo piano. Poulenc's Improvisation #15 "Hommage à Edith Piaf" is the bridge between their worlds and the album's inspiration.

There are some brilliantly original keyboard recitals coming from independent labels these days, and this is certainly one of them. Poulenc’s idiom is saturated with the sounds of the Parisian cabarets of the 1920s and ’30s. A splendid tribute to two major contemporaneous figures in French music who, to the best of our knowledge, never actually met. – David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday
